Diagnostic Medical Sonography

DMS (Ultrasound)

This program provides the student with knowledge and skills necessary to competently and safely perform entry-level DMS procedures.  It will also prepare the student for the ARDMS national registry examinations in Abdominal, Obstetric/Gynecologic, and Vascular (RVT) areas.


New Program Prerequisite:

All applicants applying to the 2016 DMS Program are required to enroll in CESO-0100 Exploring Sonography course. This online course must be completed before submitting a program application.

To enroll in this course you must contact the Registration office at (801) 957-5200.  This course is self paced so students may enroll up to the last week of each semester the course is offered.

CESO-0100 Exploring Sonography course will provide an overview of the medical sonography field as well as the Salt Lake Community College medical sonography program. Topics include preparing for a career in sonography, program overview, and perspectives from students as well as those employed in the field. This course is part of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography application process.

The next CESO-0100 course will be offered in the spring.  

In addition to being admitted through Enrollment Services as a non-matriculated student to Salt Lake Community College School of Applied Technologies & Professional Development, students applying to the DMS program must complete one of the admission pathways listed below: 

Admission Paths:

There are three pathways to admission into the SLCC DMS program. The three pathways are outlined as follows.

Pathway            

Requirements 

 Pathway 1 Complete a 4 year bachelor's degree in any major. All prerequisite requirements are waived for students applying with a 4 year bachelor's degree.
 Pathway 2 Complete a 2 year associate's degree in a patient care field.
 Pathway 3 Complete the following pre-requisites with a "B-" or better. Prerequisites must be completed by the end of the spring 2014 term in order to be considered for the 2014 DMS program.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • PHYS 1010 Elementary Physics
  • COMM 1010 or 1020 Communications
  • MATH 1010 Intermediate Algebra (taken within the last five years) OR, complete a Accuplacer Placement exam with a score placing you in Math 1010 or higher. Accuplacer score must be current (not any older than a year).

BIOL 1610/1615 College Biology is a prerequisite for the Anatomy and Physiology courses which are required prerequisites.  In addition, CHEM 1210 or CHEM 1110 is a prerequisite to enroll in BIOL 2420/2425.

Please note, the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer's (ARDMS) requires those students not possessing a bachelors degree (pathway 1) or a two year degree in a patient care related field (pathway 2) to complete an additional 12 months of full time clinical ultrasound experience after completion of the DMS program. Work experience and clinical experience cannot overlap. Unpaid, volunteer, or barter experience will not be accepted. Students are responsible for locating their own clinical site to complete this requirement.
