How do I get started in a program that leads to a Utah Professional Educator License?

Be accepted in the Utah State Office of Education Alternative Routes to Licensure (ARL) Program

Once you are accepted into the ARL program and receive your Professional Growth Plan from the state, you can apply for admission to Salt Lake Community College and register for courses in Transition to Teaching.

Who is eligible for the ARL or Transition to Teaching Program?

Alternative Routes to Licensure

This program is for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a subject area taught in Utah schools, and who are currently teaching in a public school under contract, but have not completed a teacher preparation program.

Career and Technical Education Alternative Preparation (CTE/APP)

This program is for individuals with backgrounds in business, trades, and industry.

Troops to Teachers (TTT)

Eligible military personnel can enroll in this program to begin new careers as public school teachers.

Students must have approval from the Utah State Office of Education and have a professional development plan before they can register for classes in the Alternative Routes to Licensure program. More detailed information is available on the USOE website.

Do I need to be a SLCC student to register for ARL classes?

Yes, you must be admitted to Salt Lake Community College as a student before you will be able to register for classes.

To apply:

  • Follow instructions on SLCC's Admission Steps page
  • In the Academic Plan section of the application, select "Take classes for personal interest or to transfer to another college/university (Non-Matriculated)" then select "Alternative Routes to Licensure (PI)"
  • Do not select degree-seeking or you will be required to turn in CPT or ACT scores
  • There is a non-refundable $40 application fee

*Important* Make sure you plan ahead. Admissions application can take 5-10 days to process. You will not be able to register for classes until you have been admitted to SLCC as a student

How do I determine which courses I need?

Consult your Professional Growth Plan and determine which teacher preparation courses you need. If you do not have a Professional Growth Plan, contact the person in charge of your Alternative Routes to Licensure (ARL) program at the Utah State Office of Education. To help you plan your course of study, refer to the courses listed on the Transition to Teaching Program Information page. Keep in mind that all courses will be available in future semesters.

Register for CEAL 0100 - Prerequisite Course

If you are new to the Transition to Teaching program, you must also register for the prerequisite course: Transition to Teaching: CEAL 0100. This is a 15-hour block of instruction which will be recorded on the USOE personal data system (CACTUS). This course will give an overview of the program’s five required courses and will present the core competencies teachers are expected to master in a school setting. You may also be concurrently enroll in one or more of the other Transition to Teaching courses once you are registered for CEAL 0100.

You will need to know your Salt Lake Community College student number, the CRN XXXXX (five digit course request number), the course ID (EDU 2XXX) and site location. This information is listed on the Transition to Teaching Program Information page.

You must be admitted to SLCC before you will be able to register for a course. You can apply for admission online here.

Many Transition to Teaching classes are taught in a webinar format, which means the student can participate in class from home or office. 

Webinar/Hybrid Courses

Transition to Teaching webinar courses are available through Canvas. The username and password to login are the same as the student's MyPage username and password. Students must be computer literate so they can work independently. It is imperative that program participants have access to a computer and Internet browser that meet Canvas' technology requirements.

Students taking the webinar courses are required to review the Adobe Connect tutorial page. Students must have access to a microphone and camera in order to interact with the instructor and other class members during the webinars. In order to participate in a webinar, the student should log into the course through Canvas; then select "conference" off the left menu; then select "join" under the New Conferences.  This will bring the student in to the Adobe Connect virtual classroom.

How do I pay?

Call Miller Campus (801) 957-5210. Please note: Most Transition to Teaching classes are not eligible for Financial Aid.

There is a $100 tuition fee for the prerequisite course: Transition to Teaching - CEAL 0100. This non-credit workshop is required before students can take the five core teacher preparation courses. The workshop will be entered in CACTUS and students will get one semester credit through the Utah State Office of Education (USOE).

There is a $350 tuition fee for each core Transition to Teaching course. There is an additional $30 fee for all webinar courses. 

Student can pay the full amount of tuition at registration or full tuition can be paid by the tuition deadline date of each semester.

Students can also arrange a payment plan with SLCC using STIL.

What is the last day to drop classes?

Webinars and Hybrids: Dropping classes with a full refund will only be allowed within five business days of the first day of class; after that day, no refunds will be given.

Six-day Block Classes: Dropping classes with a full refund will not be allowed after the first day of class.
